As companies embrace digital transformation and conduct business utilizing abundant data in new ways; there frequently are many challenges managing this.  Modern technology solutions exist to help companies get their relevant and timely information for mission-critical business decisions in various formats.  In order to streamline information, Microsoft has developed a solution to help in shaping and transform your business data called Power Query.  Power Query can be used with other Microsoft products such as Excel, Power BI, Analysis Service, and more.  We will discuss How is MS Power Query used in Power BI?

Power Query is a data transformation and preparation engine used to model data. It is a graphical interface that allows the user to connect and model data from a variety of sources. Power Query and Power BI are strongly connected. One cannot create a great Power BI dashboard or report without the use of Power Query. The validity of your Power BI report is dependent solely on the quality of data you report on. Power Query is a very powerful tool that allows the user to transform data, perform calculations, merge data tables, and a host of many other powerful functions.

Mastering MS Power Query will allow the developer to generate clean precise data models that will take less overhead and run more efficiently.  There are times that the Power Query graphical interface is limited and requires more advanced commands to complete the developer’s desired transformations.  Part of mastering Power Query will require understanding the scripting language it uses behind the graphical interface. This scripting language is called M. Any transformations, changes, and calculations done in Power Query ultimately happen via M.  Power query require as much learning as Power BI. The results in Power BI are only as good as the data model generated in Power Query. The two are very closely related.

The preparation of this data’s goal is then to be utilized in Microsoft Power BI. To review, Microsoft Power Business Intelligence, or  Microsoft Power BI, is a real-time business analytics solution that lets you visualize your data and share insights within your organization for better decision-making.  Power BI allows you to embed insightful data into your app or website.  Connect to hundreds of data sources and utilized Power BI to create visuals your business can use such as dashboards and reports to give companies a clearer view of business operations and insights into trends, reporting, alerts, etc.

Let’s take a look at some real-world business challenges and how Power Query can help:
